چکیده

Parkinson’s disease (PD) belongs to a class of neurodegenerative diseases that affect the patient’s speech, motor, and cognitive capabilities. All three deÞcits affect the multimodal communication channels of speech and gesture. We present a study on the changes in speech pause patterns and gesture holds before and after treatment. We present the results of a pilot study of two Idiopathic PD patients who have undergone Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT). We show that there was a consistent change in the location of pauses with respect to semantic sentential utterance units. After treatment, the number and duration of pauses within sentential units decreased while the inter sentential pauses increased. This indicates reduction in hesitation and increase in speech phrasing. We also found a decrease in the number of sentence repairs and the time spent in repairs. For gesture, we found that non-rest holds intersecting with within-sentence pauses appears to decline after treatment, as does the ratio of rest holds during speech against rest holds between sentences. While the work is preliminary, these patterns suggest that multimodal discourse characteristics might provide access to the underlying cognitive state under the load of nar-

Holds as Gestural Correlates to Empt

Holds are defined as an active configured gestural state where no intended (hand) motion is perceived. We analyzed the audio and video from a cartoon story telling from memory, in order to determine the extent to which gestural holds overlap with speech phenomena such as empty and filled pauses. Data from two female participants are analyzed: an Italian and an American English-speaker, each usi...

Temporal Variables in Parkisonian Speech

Temporal variables were detailed and compared in a text read by ten French subjects with mild to moderate Parkinson disease (PDS’s) and ten French healthy control subjects (CS’s). Longer total pause times were found for PDS’s, correlated to higher numbers of pauses and longer mean pause duration. The typical relationship observed between the distributional scheme of pauses and syntactic structu...

Comparing Verb and Object Naming Between Patients With Parkinson Disease and Patients With Cortical Stroke

Objectives: Based on recent studies, verb naming is more impaired than noun naming in patients with Parkinson Disease (PD). Noun and verb retrieval problems has been well documented in patients with cortical damage. To explore the possible contribution of cortex and subcortex areas in word finding test performance, we studied verb and object naming in patients with cortical and subcortical lesi...

Gesture as an indicator of early error detection in self-monitoring of speech

There is a theoretical controversy regarding when the selfmonitoring process interrupts the speech stream. One view holds that the speech stream is interrupted as soon as an error is detected. Another view holds that, even after an error is detected, the speaker does not interrupt immediately but continues speaking and at the same time plans the upcoming repair. We address this question by obse...
